About Department

The present Buxi Jagabandhu Bidyadhara Autonomous College started functioning as the “Science College” in the year 1957 affiliated to Utkal Universtiy, Vanivihar.The Department of Biotechnology came into existence as Self Financing Course since 2007 with an aim to impart teaching and research that expand knowledge of biology and biotechnology for the undergraduate students. The admission into this Self-financing Undergraduate Program is done through SAMS Odisha. The sanctioned Student Strength for the BSc. Biotechnology
program is 24.

The Vision is to educate students for lifelong learning by drawing attention to the vast world of knowledge of technologies being implied towards the biological science to enhance productivity and better yields in various fields of Biological Sciences. With this in mind, we aim to provide a firm foundation with in-depth and wide knowledge related to biology and its applications, to build in the next generation of scholars and teachers

The Mission of the Program is to provide quality education through updated academics and practical hand through activities so that we can prepare the talented youth in the field of Biotechnology who shall stand tall as a responsible citizens in nation building.

B.Sc Honours in Biotechnology

U.G.C. recommended CBCS syllabus has been introduced in IMSc.BI from the academic Session 2023-24, where in Bioinformatics at graduation level includes 14 Core Course, 4 Generic Elective Course, 2 Ability Enhancement Courses, 2 Skill Enhancing Courses, 3 Discipline Specific Elective Courses along with one Mini project at graduation level for evaluation. In Bioinformatics at Post Graduation level there are 18 Core papers from various bioinformatics subject skills along with a Major Dissertation paper at the end semester.

There is a strong connection between a teacher and the students. This is very important for a
student’s success. The teacher’s involvement in the student’s study will encourage him to
improve his performance. Years though we have seen and marked in good Students
progression defines and quantifies the methods being implemented in the classrooms. Faculty
are open up methods of communication like email, phone calls, WhatsApp, PDF, PPT etc.
• Use of green board, chalk and duster as a usual traditional method for teaching along
with PowerPoint presentation and projector.

• Peer instruction exercise:- speed MCQs solving, peer-to-peer discussions etc.
• Students are encouraged for a good connection with the teacher.

• Teaching should not belong only to a room. You can invite them to the library, field,
field studies, workshops in premier research organization etc.

The Department comprises of well developed laboratory with high end equipment Like PCR, Spectrophotometer, DNA Isolation Kit, pH Meter, UV Transilluminator, Gel Electrophoric unit etc. For better practical based approach the College had taken approaches for Outreach programs in Premeir Organisations of the State like RMRC, RPRC, CIFA, NRRI and many more. This approach had initiated development in proactical knowledge of the subject along with helping in good Students Progression either in Higher studies or Placement
