ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Master of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication (MA in JMC), BJB (A) College is dedicated to the task of producing journalists and mass communicators with high professional and moral standards. It is a postgraduate course designed to provide students with world-class journalism education adapted to the specific needs of the State as well as India. It seeks to prepare its graduates to achieve the highest standards in all branches of the profession, keeping in focus the trend and thrust of convergence and digitisation in the media, and the consequent demands for multiple skills made on the contemporary journalist. Members of the previous batch have proved to be in high demand and are already at work in all areas of journalism. Their success is a tribute both to their talent and to the institution that educated and trained them.
1ST Semester
The first Semester is an extensive series of lectures and workshops on gathering and presenting news. Through laboratory exercises and outside assignments, students learn to seek out information and convey it in journalistic form. This experience helps them develop the variety of skills indispensable to all branches of journalism; in particular, the ability to write clear, straightforward, and concise English. In similar lectures and workshops, students learn to edit news copy and to write headlines for various media. They learn to select, report, edit, and produce pieces in the form required by the particular stream they have chosen. Under the guidance of professionals, they develop their skills in interviewing, researching and news gathering, and sharpen their ability to recognise and develop stories
2nd Semester
In the second term, students begin to familiar with the sought after subject of Public Relations. They learn to develop the techniques of Image Building and managing crisis of a Organisation and produce Leaflets, Brochures, House Journal and various printed materials as required by the PR Professionals. Under the guidance of professionals, they develop their skills in Fact Finding, Planning, Implementation and Feed Back collections to sharpen their ability. During this Semester they are exposed to use of Internet and other information and data resources.
3rd Semester
In the third Semester, students pursue their stream on Radio and Television and start producing TV and Radio news programmes and documentaries. During this Semester they are also exposed to the world of Adverting.
4th Semester
In the fourth Semester, students pursue their stream specializations and Dissertation work. Dissertation is a written work of 5,000 to 8,000 words, required of all students. By the end of the Third Semester faculty members will have advised students on the selection of topics and approved their proposals; they now supervise the research and writing required to complete the project. Students defend their dissertation in a viva voce session with the designated supervisor at the end of the fourth semester.

PLACEMENT
The College counsels students on placement and assists them by arranging on-and-off-campus interviews at the end of the academic year. BJB Journalism and mass communication department has become the preferred destination for media organisations in search of talented and capable young recruits and has been registering excellent placement for many years. BJB Journalism and mass communication department graduates are currently working in news organisations throughout the state as well in different parts in India.
