Overview

About Department

The Department of Sociology was established in 1989 and now operating in the building of New Arts Block, B.J.B. Autonomous College, Bhubaneswar.  The Department offers both UG and PG programs with the sanctioned seats of 40 and 32 respectively. It has been assigned with two class rooms, one seminar library in the first floor of the building. The department has one sanctioned post for teaching, assisted by four guest faculties.

  • To be a potential ground of excellence in understanding the essence of studying the science of society with focus on innovative teaching, learning and research activities and building a creative, promising and enlightened human force.
  1. To enlighten students with the depth of Sociological knowledge in order to enable them to develop their sociological imagination in understanding their society with a scientific approach.
  2. To create and disseminate knowledge through learning and research in order to build inquisitiveness and develop critical understanding of the society.
  3. To equip students with the power of knowledge, leadership and decision-making capacity by inculcating a sense of commitment towards their society and community.
  4. To provide a platform for free growth of inner potentialities and scope for intellectual, human and aesthetic expansion of the individual personality.

The department follows CBCS pattern for UG and designed its own course structure for PG. Implementation of new curriculum as per NEP 2020 is in the process to be implemented very soon. Blended mode of learning is the part of the teaching-learning process, it has also adopted Innovative practices through seminars, Book-review sessions, remedial classes, outreach activities and exposure visit to places with sociological importance.

UG program offers 14 core papers, 03 DSE papers and one dissertation of 100 marks. PG program offers 17 core papers, 02 elective papers and one dissertation of 100 marks. Department also offers a Value-Added Course on “Academic Writing”.

  2. An inter-college Youth Festival was organized by the department of Sociology in association with OXFAM on the eve of worldwide activism on ‘violence against women’ on 25th November, 2019. Around 150 student-participants from around ten colleges and two universities have participated in it.
  3. With the initiative of Sociology Department, an inter-college students Awareness program was conducted on increasing Global Inequality in association with OXFAM in Nov, 2019 at master canteen Square, Bhubaneswar
  4. We have organized an inter-departmental two-day workshop on “Unstereotyping Cinema and women’s Right” in association with OXFAM from 16th to 17th January, 2020.
  5. Dr. Harihar Sahoo, Dept. of Development Studies, International Institute of Population Science (IIPS) was invited to deliver his talk on “Demographic Tranisition in India: Issues and Challenges” on 31st October, 2019.
  6. Pravas Kumar Sarangi, a motivational Speaker and Career Counselor has delivered his talk on “Career after Graduation” in the Annual seminar of the Department organized on 03/03/2020.
  7. Mr, Ashok kr. Behera, a researcher and career counselor at Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan was invited to enlighten our students on “Employability and Career making in Sociology” in the month of 20th November, 2018.
  8. Basant Rath, IPS, an alumnus of our department was invited in the month of 9th January, 2019 to inspire and guide our students on “Student Character and Career Building”.
  9. A workshop was also organized on “Community Participation in Mother and Child care” in the 15th January, 2019, Resource Person: Mr. Shibananda Rath, a senior project manager in EKJUT and alumnus of the Department.
  10. Ramakant Mishra (Rtd, Prof in English) delivered his talk on “Relevance of Regional Language in Everyday Life”, organized in he annual function of he Department on 1st March, 2019.
  11. Annual Seminar of the Department was organized on 23rd August, 2021 on the theme “Sports in India: Opportunities and Challenges”. Dr. Pabitra Mohan Nayak, Assistant Professor in Sociology, F. M. University, Vyasa Vihar, Balasore was invited as the Chief Guest and Dr. Tapan Pradhan, Senior Executive at Reserve Bank of India and an Alumnus of the department was invited as Guest Speaker.
  12. A special seminar was organized on the eve of International Women’s Day celebration on “Gender Violence in Odisha: Challenges and Redress” in the department on 4th March, 2022. Invited guest Deepak kumar Nayak, ACP, State Emergency Resource Centre enlightened students on the prevalence of domestic violence in Odisha and the existing response mechanisms of the state. Students also presented their papers and participated in the discussion followed by seminar presentations.
  13. An Alumni-Students Interface was organized in association with ‘Mo College’ to discuss on “Career Prospects in Sociology- with special reference to Public Policy”, delivered by LAMP fellowship holder Amrit Mahapatra on 27/10/2022 in our department.
  14. A Special Student’s Seminar on “An Exposure Visit to Raghurajpur – The Heritage Village” based on student’s observation in their recent study trip to Raghurajpur was organized on 17/12/2022.
  15. A Special lecture on “Academic Writing in Sociology and Research Ethics” was delivered by Dr. Papesh Kumar Lenka, Assistant Professor in Sociology, Department of Sociology, Utkal University on 18/03/2023.
  16. A Special lecture on “When it is All about Writing” was delivered by Miss Samyati Mohanty, research Scholar, Department of Sociology, Utkal University on 18/03/2023.
  17. A Special lecture on “Review of Literature” was delivered by Miss Chinmayee Mishra, research Scholar, Department of Sociology, Utkal University on 03/04/2023.
  18. Popular Columnist Dr. Biswabharati, daughter of late Padmashri Awardee Prof. Radhamohan, a social activist, was invited as the chief guest to the Annual function of the Department to inspire and guide our students on 06/ 04/ 2023.
  19. A Special lecture on “Academic Dishonesty and Tips & Tricks of Presentation Style” was delivered by Dr. Hemant Kumar Dash, Asst. Professor in Public Administration, Utkal University, on 13/04/2023.
  20. A Special Seminar cum Workshop was organized by the department on “The Protection of the Rights of Transgender” in association with P.G. department of Journalism and Mass Communication and the voluntary organization “SAKHA”. Founder of SAKHA, a social activist and a popular transgender figure Meera Parida and her associates have addressed and motivated our students on the theme of the concept.
  21. Department of Sociology in association with the department of Anthropology and Department of MSW have organized a three days international seminar on the topic “People, Culture and living Heritage” from 6th August to 8th August, 2023 in the college premises. Around 200 delegates and paper presenters from within and outside the country have participated in this seminar.
  22. A social awareness program on “Alcoholism and Drug Abuse” was organized by the Sociology Department to spread awareness among students and nearby slums on 20th October, 2022 through Street Play and Student’s Rally.
  23. A study cum exposure trip to Raghurajpur, the heritage village of India was conducted for a sociological exploration of the place on 14th December, 2022.
